13, Amended looks at how slavery is legal in US prisons and how the for-profit prison system will be a template for our future as slaves of debt and human capital in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Our nation was built on the backs of imprisoned human beings who were bought and sold as chattel into slavery. Although this practice officially ended over 150 years ago, the 13th amendment of the US Constitution allowed slavery to continue in the prisons of America.
Since its very inception, Capitalism has relied on the exploitation of people and built itself and its power in the world through slavery. The only reason the slave trade went away when it did is because the provenance and tracking of chattel could not be tracked or guaranteed accurately or thoroughly enough for the investors and underwriters of human capital to know what they were getting as a return on their investment.
